My best dressed from the Met Gala

So one of fashion's biggest red carpet events happened on Monday night, and me to a red carpet event is like a moth to a light (usually my light, but whatever).  Until this year I wasn't usually sure when events were happening until the day after when I saw the pictures, but since January I've been making sure I'm in the know which celebrity event is happening and when.  This has resulted in my staying up past one o' clock numerous times to live stream each one, or at least to continuously refreshing style.com's Twitter page, and that's exactly what I did for this year's Met Gala.  And boy, am I glad I did!
Here is a collection of my favourite looks from the night, in no particular order, please understand that I based my decisions upon the fact that the theme was 'PUNK'!  Had there been no theme I would have a lot more here, but I'm giving credit to those who really considered the theme when choosing a look.

Anja Rubik in Anthony Vaccarello - This is simple but still gives a nod to the theme.  The red colour, the leather material, the upturned collar, the hair... Gisele Bundchen wore a very similar dress in black, but Anja just about won it for me.

Anne Hathaway in vintage Valentino - Now this, I like.  The first thing I noticed about Anne when I was streaming was her bleach blonde hair (which I think really suits her, by the way), and then the boobs.  I've read a couple of times that she should stop 'trying to be sexy', but you know what?  No, she shouldn't!  Every woman deserves to feel sexy, and I wasn't sure how Anne would interpret the trend seeing as 'punk' is a far cry from what she usually wears, but I thought she did it amazingly.  Phuck da h8erz!

Cara Delevingne in Burberry - Daaaaaaaamn Cara!  The low cut neckline, the studs, the abundance of jewellery, the smoky make-up, and the hair!  Just everything is right, like spot on.  This is how to do modern day punk, ladies, take note.

Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood -  Tartan, fishnets and wearing Vivienne Westwood, that's punk enough, right?  I'm usually indifferent when it comes to Christina's red carpet fashion choices, but I think she pulled this look off perfectly.

Hilary Rhoda - Now, I really wasn't sure about including this one, and I left it literally until the last minute to decide to, meaning even now I'm now not sure if she should be in here at all... But hey, it's a more glamourous and feminine take on punk, I guess...?
Meh.

Madonna in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci - I'd be the first one to say that Madonna doesn't do too well when it comes to, er, getting dressed, and I'm pretty sure she's going through a mid-life crisis, however!  I thought her choice of outfit was bloody great considering the theme, which I know will be an unpopular opinion, but it's one night of these celebrities' lives, life's too short to put on a pretty dress for a punk night and justify it with black nail varnish, NO!
So to Madonna I say: You go Glen Coco!

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs - I've seen a lot of people indirectly ask Miley 'what the hell was you thinking?!', however I knew she'd impress me in her choice of outfit seeing as her everyday outfits are usually pretty grungy.  She opted for a simple but very apt fishnet dress, which immediately took me back to the 90s.  And for the hairstyle haters: I'll say it again, the theme was PUNK.  Chill your beans!  She was clearly having a bit of fun, and good for her for doing it too!

Rooney Mara in Givenchy - Ok, ok, I'll admit Rooney probably shouldn't be in here, seeing as she's wearing white lace...  But the dress is so beautiful, especially with that dark lipstick, and I'm not gonna lie, I saw the fact that Rooney plays the very dark (which is almost punky, right?) Lisbeth Salander as a good enough reason to include her... Sorry!

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles and a Philip Treacy fauxhawk - DAAAAAAAAMN SJP, I salute you.  I never imagined she'd look as amazing as she did.  Without a doubt, my favourite look of the night.  The print, the boots, AND THE BLOODY MOHAWK.  What a way to embrace the theme.  Bloody amazing.

So there are my favourites, is there any which you agree/disagree with?  Or someone you think I should have included?  Do let me know your thoughts on the outfits!  I think if I attended the Met Gala this year (totally possible) I would have chosen a long, simple black dress with a low cut neckline, and then chucked on a heavily studded leather jacket, crazy hair and lots of piercings, and OF COURSE my Converse.
I've got to say, I thought it was a shame no one wore the Balmain safety pin dress from his S/S 2011 collection, talk about missed opportunity!

My best dressed at the Oscars

Naomi Watts in Giorgio Armani | Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé | Kristen Stewart in Acra Reem Couture | Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zuhair Murad
So the Oscars happened. After being thoroughly disappointed at the fashion at the BRITs last week, I was looking forward to the Oscars hoping it would reignite my hope in celebrity style on the red carpet, and I've got to say, it did a pretty good job in doing so. I didn't love everyone's looks, but there were no looks which I hated, and that almost never happens. Jennifer Lawrence was on many 'best dressed' lists, and I admired her choice, however it wasn't for me, a bit too poofy. This was reflected in her fall up the stairs when going up to do her thanks speech, which must have been really embarrassing for her but it only made me love her even more, anyone else? She's just so imperfect she's perfect, y'know?
On to my best dressed of the night, There's not many up here, but at least there's some (again, another dig at the BRITs...). For me, Jessica Chastain came out on top, showing that pale skins can wear nude dresses and still look fabulous. The gown was amazing for her and hugged her body in all the right places. Understated but gorgeous. Plus, the shade of her lipstick is perfect with the colour of the dress. Bonus points. Moving on to Naomi Watts, I'm not usually one for sequins, especially on the red carpet, I think they can look a bit... Cheap. Saying that, Naomi approached them in a way which still made her look very expensive. The cut-out shoulder detail really gives the dress that special something and the shape is extremely flattering to her tiny figure. The hair and the subtle smoky eye topped off the whole look.
Kristen Stewart. Most likely a controversial choice, but she's actually a red carpet favourite of mine and more often than not I really admire her bold choices. I think this white lace gown is amazing on her and I really like the tulle bits at the bottom. Plus I kind of love how she's just left her hair and not done anything with her make-up... Is that wrong? Aaaand last but not least Catherine Zeta-Jones, who isn't usually a favourite. However I posted about a month back my love for Zuhair Murad's spring couture collection, and I'm so pleased someone has worn one of his amazing dresses on the red carpet. I really like it worn with the hair down and lack of jewellery except earrings. The gold and nude colours in the dress really suit her skin tone, too.

And at the Oscars after-parties:

Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen | Zoe Saldana in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci | Zooey Deschanel in Valentino | Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad

Not only was the Oscars fashion impressive, I was as equally excited to see what everyone would be wearing to the after-parties.  Out of everyone's I think I'd have to say Zoe Saldana is my favourite as the dress is understated but sexy and elegant and I'd definitely wear it (y'know, if I got invites to these things... Which I totally do I'm just always too busy), I really like the lace with the satin fabric.  I reckon she should have worn this to the Oscars instead, that's all I'm sayin'.
Lily Collins was a close second for me, another Zuhair Murad dress.  It's a very unique gown especially as women usually opt for black or nude colours on the red carpet, so I respect her bold choice.  Blue is one of my favourite colours to wear and I think she pulled it off amazingly, plus the stripes work really well with the lace, whoda funk it?
Zooey Deschanel isn't ever really my type of style when she walks on the red carpet.  Too girlie and pretty for me, however this Valentino dress is to die for.  Stunning.
Aaaand lastly Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen.  Pretty simple overall but the colour speaks volumes.  I really like the tulle skirt, too.

Who were your favourites?  Do you disagree with any of my choices?

Why I think the BRITs '13 was POOP

So the BRITs happened on Wednesday night.  Maybe you heard of it, it's only one of the biggest events there is in terms of music award shows, you know, no big deal.  I'd been looking forward to it for a good few weeks, and to say I was underwhelmed at half past ten on Wednesday night, would be an understatement.  Here are my reasons why:

The fashion (or lack of):
What. The actual. F***?  It's pretty much a given that if you're walking the red carpet at the BRITs, money isn't really an issue to you.  And it wasn't, everyone wore designer, but it just goes to show it's not what you wear, but it's how you wear it.  Gemma Arterton wears it like she's a sixty year old going to a disco.  Lana Del Rey wears it like she's going to the office, a really, really dull office.  Corrine Rae Bailey wears it like she's conforming against irons, and Katherine Jenkins wears it like she feels she looks really high fashion in what she's got on, which just makes it look ten times worse.  GREAT JOB, ladies, WELL DONE, you really outshone yourselves.  I'm f***ing eighteen years old and could have done a better job if I had gone to Topshop with a £40 budget.  I'm not saying this to brag, I'm saying this to exaggerate my whole point.
I really just need to not think about these anymore.  If you're thinking "Well what about the people who did dress good?", THEY DIDN'T.  Not one.  You can argue how beautiful Taylor Swift looked all you want, but it was a long black dress, oh THE ORIGINALITY.  Come on people.  Aim a little higher.

The music:

Muse started off the show.  Great.  No sarcasm intended, I like a bit of Muse and I think Matt Bellamy has a sexy singing voice.  At this point I sat down with some chocolate, rubbing my hands together in anticipation of what exciting things were to come in the next couple of hours.  Boy, I didn't know shit.  Justin Timberlake?  Meh, okay, he's just brought a new song out, understandable why he's on stage, I don't really get the hype but whatever.  Oh, Robbie Williams, nah, not for me.  One Direction, just to remind us how awesome our generation's music taste is (sarcasm definitely intended this time).  Emili Sande?  Heard it all before, and then some.  Breath taking performance?  Nuh-uh.  She also mentioned in her thank you speech her loneliness.  You're right Emili, it must be really hard, although I'm sure I just saw you hug about six people around your table in celebration.  I don't even know six people.

The award:

I don't know who Damien Hirst is, and it took me a few weeks to realise that, no Dem, that ginger guy in Homeland isn't designing the award.  However he might as well have now, because polka dots aren't exactly, urm, creative, are they?  I know it's his 'singature motif' and I can completely see why he used it, but maybe next year we can hand out human size blown up inflatable awards to the winners.  That would be fun.

The lack of Rihanna:

The BRITs ain't nothing without Rihanna.  Clearly.  She was like 90% of the reason I was watching in the first place.

The host:

I have absolutely nothing against James Cordon but I like it when presenters aren't so scripted and are a bit silly, take Alan Carr, for example, I think he would have thrown a rude/sarcastic joke in about someone somewhere.

No eff ups:

That's what the BRITs is about, right?  The arguing, the showing of bums, the cutting off Adele's speeches, I mean come on, where's the controversy?  The chaos?
I never thought I'd say this, but where the f*** is Kanye West when you need him?

The good things about the BRITs 2013:

- Paloma Faith's outfit.  She looked very pretty and nice, not show stopping, but nice all the same.
- Dave Grohl.
- Ben Howard's voice.
- Uhhhhhhhh... Nope, that's all I've got.

My best and worst dressed from the BAFTAs

Marion Cotillard in Dior Couture | Paloma Faith in Nicholas Oakwell Couture

Eddie Redmayne in Burberry | Jennifer Lawrence in Dior | Amy Adams in Elie Saab

Jessica Chastain in Roland Mouret | Samuel L. Jackson

And those who didn't impress...

Saoirse Ronan in Christopher Kane | Anne Hathaway in Burberry

I usually don't like enough looks at one red carpet event to post about it, but in one day I came across two - the BAFTAs and the Grammys.  I've already posted about my favourite looks from the Grammys yesterday as well as those who didn't impress, so I thought today I'd do the BAFTAs.  I didn't get chance to watch it  (although I've seen a clip of Bradley Cooper welling up, I CAN'T COPE WITH CRYING MEN, it's too much!) I was keeping up with what everyone was wearing.
Out of everyone above I've got to say Marion Cotillard impressed me the most.  I've already seen the dress been worn before in a navy blue and I wasn't sure about it then due to its peculiar shape and design, however the vibrant yellow colour has completely sold it to me.  I probably would have worn it with some gold jewellery instead and added some black nail varnish, but hey, she rocked it.
Paloma Faith has never been a red carpet favourite of mine.  I appreciate how she has a niche and loves fashion from a certain era and what not, however I always feel like she goes one step too far.  She has worn some amazing dresses but then has worn a silly big thing on her head, you know?  Don't get me wrong, she has a wicked, eccentric personality and she's reflecting that in her style choices, but I just wouldn't wear what she does.  Saying that, I think she looked pretty damn great at the BAFTAs and the dress suits her perfectly.
I won't lie but I've included Eddie Redmayne mostly because of his face.  I mean, he does look dapper, but dem cheekbones.  Jennifer Lawrence's red carpet choices are a bit of a hit and miss for me and I haven't been keen over them as of late (this doesn't mean I don't think she's one of the most awesome people in the world) but I think she looked lovely in this Dior dress, especially with her hair slicked back.  Amy Adams' Elie Saab dress was damn sexy with the lace detail, I felt like the big bun mummyfied it a bit though?  I liked Jessica Chastains' look simply because I thought the bright blue looked lovely against her hair.  Lastly we have Samuel L. Jackson whose look I just love.  Plus, HE'S A COOL ASS MOTHERFUCKER.
I'm sad to include Anne Hathaway on my 'Not so impressive' list as I am a big fan of hers but I feel like this dress was cheapened by the studs on the top and it was a bit boring.  I would have reeeeeally liked to have seen her in something like this bright fuchsia dress.  Moving on to Saoirse Ronan, I just think it's pretty bad... I don't want to sound too harsh but it looks like an sixty year old woman's dress.  You're young girl, embrace it!
What do you think of my choices?  Maybe you disagree?
P.S. Did you see Helen Mirren sporting her new pink crop?  Uh-mazing!  What a woman.

My pick of the Grammys best dressed, and the worst...

Rihanna in custom Azzedine Alaia | Kelly Rowland in Georges Chakra

Adele in Valentino | Solange Knowles (not sure who she's wearing?) | I don't even know this guy is...

And those who didn't impress...

Beyoncé in Osman | Alexa Chung in... Well, who's bothered?

So last night the Grammys happened, one of my favourites for red carpet fashion.  I watched the live streaming of it on 'E!' and I was in my element.  I'm hard to impress when it comes to red carpet.  'You're a celebrity, at an amazing event, and have enough money for any dress you want, so why have you gone for that?' goes through my head most of the time.  However at the Grammys most people seem to remember that actually it's okay to wear an amazing dress and stand out.  Whoda funk it?
This year, women attending the Grammys got sent a memo telling them not to flash too much skin.  I wasn't happy about this as the skin flashing dresses are pretty much always my favourites (see above), but fortunately for me no one listened (again, see above).
Last year I also watched the live streaming and Rihanna's amazing, definitely-flash-showing Armani dress completely stole the show for me, so it's no surprise she's at the top of my list this year too.  It's such a perfect dress for such a beautiful woman and I am not surprised in the slightest that it's custom made because it absolutely looks like it was made for her.  The colour, the material, the sheer fabric - flawless.  Rihanna's lipstick and loose hair topped the look off perfectly.
All of this makes it even harder for me to say that actually Rihanna isn't number one for me this year, as Kelly Rowland's dress has just scraped first place.  Oh my GOSH she looks so very sexy and I can't take my eyes off the very conveniently placed big black triangle.  Wow Kelly, just wow.
Other looks which were up there included Adele, who looks amazing in ACTUAL COLOUR for once, Solange, whose made me think emerald green was invented just for her and she is ROCKING that afro, and also some man, who I don't know but has a great style and even greater shoes.
Now, for the ones that underwhelmed me.  Taylor Swift would have been on here but I couldn't even be bothered to go on about how not bothered I was about her choice.
Beyoncé, we all know how amazing she is, she has an extremely impressive reputation and is practically the queen of the celebrity world.  All meaning that she can probably wear WHATEVER THE F*** SHE WANTS and get away with it (bar knee high socks at the Super Bowl, what was that?) so why, WHY, did she choose a black pant suit?  For the Grammys?  Did she just come from an important work meeting?  No, didn't think so.  Come on B', life's too short to not wear a breath-taking outfit at any given opportunity.  After a mere thirty seconds browsing Net-a-Porter I already found a dress which she would have looked much better in.
Moving on to Alexa Chung - Chung, you're meant to know your shit, so why have you shown up to the Grammys - of all places - looking like you're going for a stroll to get some ice cream?  Or for a ride on your vintage bicycle?  Yawnnnnn.

What do you think?  Who were your favourites?  I'd love to know if you agree or disagree with any of my choices, fashion is meant to split opinions, right?
